In mid 2022, Etsy made some changes to how it collects/doesn't collect Canadian sales tax for its Canadian sellers.

Out of the box, the Canadian Etsy Seller Spreadsheet will total up your sales by province and your sales within the entire country of Canada.

Since Canadian sales tax requirements vary by location, revenue amount, and Etsy's settings (whether you've given them your tax ID prior to the change they made or not), we can customize your spreadsheet to meet your specific business' needs.

If you are a Canadian Etsy seller for which Etsy is collecting & remitting GST on your behalf, no additional changes should need to be made to your spreadsheet. Just note that Etsy has stopped reporting any sales tax collected as part of your gross revenue. You'll find that when you import in your CSV, the sales tax collected column is now blank. Since they're remitting on your behalf, they've decided to stop reporting those amounts in your Orders CSV as part of your total sales.

If you are a Canadian Etsy seller for which Etsy is NOT collecting & remitting GST and you are responsible for remitting GST yourself, you can use the included Canadian sales tax tab to see your total Canadian sales. You can apply your GST rate to your gross sales as necessary to figure out how much you owe.

There is some debate on whether you should include GST as already embedded in your pricing, or if you want to apply your GST rate to your gross sales. Whichever method you go with will result in a slightly different sales tax amount. If you want us to add a formula to your sales tax tab to calculate your GST for you, just send an email to support and we will customize that for you. We just need to know if you want to consider your sales tax rate embedded in your sales or not.

Here's an example:

Let's say you charge your customer $100.

You could say that you owe 5% of $100 in GST = $5.

Or you can say, GST was included in the $100, so that would then imply that the actual sales price + 5%(actual sales price) = $100.

In that case, if we solve for X ("actual sales price"), then your sales price was actually $95.24 and your sales tax collected was $4.76.
